Culture of Fear
As a young Filipino citizen living in this backward and poverty-stricken country, I am terrified. Terrified on the situation of the society in which committing crime seems like just a daily routine to those powerful personalities who simply looks out for himself. And by this terrorist act, they remain in power and maintain their high standard of living. Most specially that every now and then, bulk of unresolved cases about media killings continues and worse, last Monday, August 23, another tragedy caught the attention of the entire people where in eight innocent human beings died needlessly and in a very traumatic way. Thus, the number of the victims of injustices increased. And so with these scenarios, we do all want to find justice, to seek for the truth, to speak up but then it seems that our fear is stronger than our faith. We are afraid to lose something by telling the truth that’s why we rather choose to harden our hearts and try to ignore the happenings around us. Or shall we say, we, Filipinos have been grown tired of fighting for what is right because since back then, we never have had a slim chance to succeed and in our mind, we think only that our effort will just be a waste of time because only those on the top will prevail.
As we are now trapped within the premises of culture of fear, we should have to find a way to escape. We have to fight back. Yes it’s not that easy to put it up into action, but as for the rest of us, life is hard as it is so we have to struggle to survive one day. I’ll not wait for the time that I will blame myself for not doing anything to erase the inculcation of culture of fear that was deeply implanted into the minds of my countrymen. What we do now has a great influence in the future. And so with this, we must not wait for the time that the next generations to come will experience more than we have today.
